The engineering process is the sequence of steps that engineers must follow to come up with a solution to any issue. This involves determining the objective and determining the constraints, then designing, building and testing. This is an essential part of any project at TWI and it helps us ensure that our projects meet high performance and safety standards. This is especially important for New York City project as they must meet strict specifications.
During this phase students investigate the issue to better understand the challenge and gather data. This is an open-ended, student-centered approach to science that redirects classes away from traditional teaching.
Students brainstorm ways to solve the issue by discussing potential solutions, writing on a whiteboard, or using software like HT4U.netto collaborate and organize their ideas. Some ideas may not be successful, but that’s OK because it gives them the chance to try different strategies and find an effective alternative.
After studying the findings of their research and brainstorming, the team selects one solution to design and construct. This could be on paper, with the aid of CAD software or the creation of a prototype that is physical or virtual. This is an exciting step for students as they are able to create something tangible that will allow students test their ideas.
This is where engineers have to be careful as they are governed by limitations like time costs, tools, and resources. Engineers must also bear in mind that their solutions must to be safe and effective to be effective in the real world.
